New post up!
Great game at Pucks N’ Purls yesterday. Marlies won 4 to 1. Lots of hockey, a little fighting, lots of penalties. In general, a great day. Thanks to everyone that came out to the game. Extra thanks to those who brought along donations to Streetknits, they were very grateful. Hope you had fun. I did!
Denise Powell presented a very grateful Duke the Dog with his scarf at the beginning of the second period. Denise designed and knit the scarf. The finished product was vey cool. The original design that won the design contest had a Marlies logo (imagine the knitting that) on the front. In the finished design, Denise added the word “Duke” on the reverse. Great way to keep him from losing his scarf Denise. The scarf was a great hit with the fans too. I saw one fan chatting it up at the Raffle Prize display table and later saw others fingering it when Duke was in the Rogers Red Zone.
What about that Fastest Knitter Face Off! Did you catch the bio about Linda Benne and Wannietta Prescod in the second period. Wasn’t that fabulous. It intrigued the Marlies staff who saw it during editing, it was all they could talk about. I saw them hovering around the Rogers Red Zone so they could see the “Face Off” in person. Imagine hockey guys wanting to watch knitting.
And the winner, as judged by Mairi McKissock, was Wannietta Prescod. Those watching on the Jumbotron said it was close. Apparently the turning of the needles at the end of the row looked like synchronized swimming. Duke the Dog, decked out in his new Marlies scarf, raised Wannietta’s arm in the air in victory, then presented her with the “crystal” trophy. Linda and Wannietta were great sports throughout, hugging at the end and declaring that they would love a rematch.
In the third period, Duke and his lovely assistants tossed yarn into the three Pucks N’ Purls sections. Hope some of it was caught by knitters. Those young women know how to toss - lots of practice with T shirts.
I hope everyone had a chance to check out the raffle prize table. Forty one of you took home prizes. The odds were great; one in 6.5. Jody May, from Creative Yarns and Joan Knits, my two colleagues on the Pucks N’ Purls organizing team did a fabulous job talking to our vendors who then so generously donated the prizes. Our very own Blanche won the coveted set of AddiClick Basic interchangeable needles donated by Wool & Wicker. Actually, it was her husband’s seat ticket that was the winner, but he wisely donated them to Blanche. Many thanks to tmeelliott, Zyrene and Sparkyinthesnow who organized and managed the Raffle Prize Table. They had a great time meeting all the winners and everyone else that stopped by. Zyrene was so hoping one of the three winners of Indigodragonfly’s “Just one Stanley Cup in my lifetime; is that too much to ask?” would want to sell it. But it was not to be.
Special thanks to Marc Lira and Michael Carlesimo from the Marlies organization for their great ideas and willingness to do almost anything to make Pucks N’ Purls a success. You were awesome guys.
Great day. Thanks everyone.
Duke the Dog was really busy. In addition to all the yarn that Estelle Design and Yarn donated to knit the scarf for the big guy, they also donated more yarn for Dukes’s Yarn Toss. Thankfully the Marlies dancers could help. Those women know how to throw.
Thanks to Diamond Yarns, Duke the Dog had more yarn to toss. So much so that he needed help from the Marlies dancing girls.
Thanks Diamond Yarns.
Three more books as Pucks N’ Purls prizes from XRX. What a lovely collection. For more information about the books and magazines that XRX publishes and the events they host check out their website at www.knittinguniverse.com.
“Entree to Entrelac: The Definitive Guide from a Biased Knitter” by Gwen Bortner is devoted to the entrelac (a French word meaning “interlaced”) technique which is used to describe a knitting technique in which a piece is worked “in small sections that are joined as they are worked. This book is intended as a resource for Entralac as well as a source for many interesting patterns.

In “Custom Knit Jackets” Jean Frost, with one master pattern, this” guides knitters through creating 12 jacket silhouettes in five standard sizes, with four different weights of yarn. Reminiscent of the designer details that have made the Chanel jacket a signature piece for more than 50 years, the details in this book add professional finish to collars, pockets, fabrics, and hand-stitched silk lining. The process to create a perfect-fit jacket requires only simple math and graph paper. Using real-body examples, Jean Frost shows how to adjust patterns for narrow shoulders, long arms, short or long waist, a large bust, and other common fitting problems.”

“Magnificent Mittens” and Socks by Anna Zilboorg “includes the author’s toe-up, free-sole sock design. This title features step-by-step instructions for the basic mitten method and for 2-color knitting, 42 charted mittens, interchangeable cuff charts, 13 edge finishes for cuffs, 7 embellishments to add color and texture, and outline charts for design-your-own-mittens.”
